TBD - To Be Determined
Our class schedule this year will include the following dances:
LINDY HOP
Lindy Hop is the “Grand Daddy” of Swing Dancing. It was “born” and evolved in Harlem ballrooms during the late 1920s and grew in popularity during the 30s and 40s. It is most recognizable for its low to the ground, “whirly” and bouncy style. It is noted for its circling basic step, fancy footwork, kick-steps and Charleston variations. Utilizing 6 and 8 count patterns, jazz steps and Charlestons, Lindy can be danced to all tempos of swing music. Lindy Hop was also the first dance to integrate air steps . Over the years, Lindy Hop has developed into two popular, yet distinct styles, Savoy Style and Hollywood (Smooth) Style . The name was coined back in 1929 in reference to Charles Lindbergh's famous trans-Atlantic flight across the Atlantic Ocean earlier that year.
BOOGIE WOOGIE (East Coast Swing)
Boogie Woogie is a six-count basic step that evolved from the Lindy Hop into its own dance during the 1940s. This is the name for this style that is perhaps the most well-known in Europe. It was called “Bop ” in the 50s and has been called “Jive " as well. “East Coast Swing ” and “The Jitterbug ” are the closest derivatives of this dance in the USA. For the purposes of our classes, we will combine all of these terms under the heading Boogie Woogie .
BALBOA
Balboa is a closed-position dance developed at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Island (Southern California) in the 1920s. Balboa is built on smooth, tight footwork and is ideal for fast tempos. It is also very adaptable and can be performed to slow music as well. According to Jonathan & Sylvia (Balboa Pros) from Santa Barbara, CA., the Balboa is danced almost exclusively in closed dance position and most closely resembles a dance the natives of 1930s Chicago called “the Shag.” It is common belief that when the ballrooms began getting very overcrowded, this dance naturally evolved since there was literally no place to swing out your partner. Incidentally, the Balboa is the dance done by the popular cartoon character “Popeye.” It is one of the hottest styles being danced in the swing scene today.
LINE DANCES
The Shim Sham
The Shim Sham is a line dance based on early jazz/tap dance steps. Lindy Hoppers have taken this original Tap Routine and made it their own. The dance is divided into 10 musical phrases with specific steps such as, the Shim Sham, the Cross Over, the Tacky Annie, and the Half-Break. The version we will teach was styled by Dean Collins.
The Madison
The Madison is an entertaining line dance that originated in the late 1950s. It is danced to the Ray Bryant tune, The Madison Time , with calls for the particular dance sequences provided by Eddie Morrison. Eddie was a disc jockey who started calling the steps live on the air in Baltimore, Maryland (USA). It soon after took off and became a smash hit dance around the country as it was demonstrated often live on the Buddy Dean Show. Based on a six count chorus step, The Madison contains several dance sequences which make playful references to the big stars of that time period. The Dance resurfaced in 1988 in the John waters film "Hairspray" and continues to live on in the swing circuit today.
PERFORMANCE CLASS
This class will be for intermediate and advanced dancers only. In this class, a short, choreographed routine will be taught throughout the full camp and then performed on one of the final days of the festival. It will be imperative that you are present each day of camp if you wish to perform this routine. Furthermore, you must be level tested on Saturday to be eligible to be part of this class or have special permission from instructors.
NOTE:
Please note that the "Swing Basics" class is meant to get non-dancers up to speed with the beginning levels of all the dances listed below. The "Lindy Basics" is specific for any subsequent Lindy Hop classes that follow and is recommended for those who have some experience with "Swing Dance" in general but are now interested in learning the Lindy Hop.
